Why Diets Don’t Work

Why Diets Don’t Work

Why do diets? According to statistics 95% pf people who lose weight through dieting will regain the weight, and often more, within 1-5 years.

One could ask why until you actually look at what diets do. It essentially restricts your food intake to a point your metabolism goes into starvation mode. That means it slows right down and this makes it even harder to lose weight.

Fad diets, associated with yo-you dieting, deny your body essential nutrients and teach the person absolutely nothing about healthy eating. The consequence is as soon as the diet is finished the person bounces back to where they were before

Diets, together with the focus on weighing yourself, can lead to eating disorders. Statistics show that people who diet are 8 times more likely to develop an eating disorder than those who don’t.

People desperate to lose weight buy Magic tablets that promise easy weight loss.  There is NO magic pill and some of the products offered by the more, shall we say, less caring companies are downright dangerous. Let me give you Fen-phen for example – an obesity drug, now banned, that caused long term heart valve damage.

There is no magic pill, no magic diet and no magic process. Your MIND created the problem and your MIND has the solution to it and that is why, in the weight change paradigm, we address the emotional and thinking issues that caused the weight to go on in the first place.

The Problems with Supplements to Diets

As I write this one of the largest diet supplement companies, has settled yet another law suit (for 15 million dollars) brought on by a previous distributor and the same company is facing a class action by its shareholders for allegedly failing to disclose to investors that its operation is based on a pyramid scheme. The company in question deny the allegation. (Source Reuters)

Diets supplements have become the ‘in thing’ in weight change industry. Increasingly, they been under the watch of the US Federal Drugs Administration who issued a notice that states

“FDA has identified an emerging trend where over-the-counter products, frequently represented as dietary supplements, contain hidden active ingredients that could be harmful. Consumers may unknowingly take products laced with varying quantities of approved prescription drug ingredients, controlled substances, and untested and unstudied pharmaceutically active ingredients.

These deceptive products can harm you! Hidden ingredients are increasingly becoming a problem in products promoted for weight loss.” To read this article on their website click here

The Theory

So, why am I talking about supplements – shouldn’t I be talking about diets?

A few years ago, if you wanted to lose weight the conventional idea was to go on a diet. Reduce your calorie intake and you will lose weight – well that is the theory! As people who have been on a diet know what normally happens is you initially lose some weight and then you get the bounce! Your metabolism goes into starvation mode and stores fat, literally out of anything, and the pounds go back on. I am not saying this happens to everyone, just the majority of people that I have come across.

Then along came diets and their supplements offering a choice of drinks, pills and food etc that promised to help you lose weight easily. The supplements are normally quite expensive and the results, when researched, are very mixed. One thing is for sure is that there are certain companies in this industry who make a HUGE amount of money. The one previously referred to has sales of 4.8 BILLION dollars a year.

Magic Solutions to Weight Loss

The thing is people will always latch onto a promise that losing weight is easy. If it does not require any effort and they just have to drink something every day then it will probably be a winner! But do they work? Well, you can do your own research.

Then we have gastric bands and hypno-gastric bands which restrict the amount of food that someone can eat. Rather drastic!

Also popular at the moment are body wraps. Well, let me tell you, if you wrap yourself in cling film you will sweat and lose water. It is not rocket science. The problem is your body will replace that water at the first opportunity thus no weight loss.

The problem with all of the above is that they don’t fix the root of the problem as to why they are overweight in the first place. This is probably why one of the major weight loss companies is offering life time memberships!

Weight is related to emotional issues or decisions, in our opinion. The client has made these unconsciously in their past and the resolution of those issues defines the client’s new thinking. Consequently, the weight changes for the better.
